The So Thai Story

So Thai Restaurant is located in Waterford Michigan.  We offer authentic Thai Cuisine and Sushi. Our passion is to serve you, and to provide you with an exquisite dining experience. Our dishes combine the rich and bold flavors of Asia, balancing the 5 fundamental tastes; spicy, sour, sweet, salty, and sharp. Each meal is prepared made-to-order and consists of fresh vegetables, meats, and sea foods.
So Thai is owned by the Sookthis Family. The name "So Thai" is a double entendre. The first meaning of So Thai was derived from taking the first two letters "SO" of the Sookthis family's last name. The second meaning was derived a bit more peculiarly. Tammy Sookthis, while having a night out with friends, enacted multiple instances of her Thai culture. This compelled her friends to say, "Tammy, you are Sooo Thai." Hence, the name So Thai Restaurant.
Though the name is new, the history is not. The Sookthis family opened their first restaurant, Siam Wok in Warren MI, in 1987. The restaurant was a small 500 sq. ft carry-out restaurant. Since then, they opened multiple restaurants in locations ranging from Warren, Troy, and Birmingham. As the Detroit economy as a whole is hitting a new revival, the Sookthis family felt the need to re-package and re-market this new restaurant to compete in this modern economy. So Thai is not just your ordinary Thai Restaurant. They offer traditional Thai dishes, but that's not where it ends. We offer sushi, new “So-Thai” creations, as well as traditional Thai dishes that have never been introduced to the Metro-Detroit market.
We welcome you to So Thai Restaurant. We hope that you enjoy our food as much as we enjoy serving you.
